These bronze medallions were manufactured by creating a wax master by hand, and then a silicone mold of from that master. The silicone was carefully cut, and then could be injected with wax repeatedly to make exact copies. I used the investment (“lost wax”) casting technique to transform the wax into bronze. The scabbard associated with it was carefully assembled from hardwood panels, then faced with black vegetable-tanned leather, and finished with a continuous, polished steel edge reinforcement.
The form of the medallions was inspired by playing the idea of combining straight lines and symmetry with organic curvature and an asymmetrical figure. The result is a totem that holds both elements together in balance, a personal yin/yang totem.
